Why does my child need a nerve treatment or a root canal?

A root canal may be necessary when a tooth has deep decay, trauma, or infection that reaches the nerve. For baby teeth, we typically perform nerve treatments to remove infected tissue while preserving the tooth until it naturally falls out. For permanent teeth, we provide full root canal treatment to clean, disinfect, and seal the tooth—preserving it for your child's long-term oral health.

At Eastvale Kids Dental Studio, we provide all care in-house with the expertise Dr. Amy and our endodontist, Dr. James Lin. This allows your child to receive specialized treatment in a familiar, supportive setting. With kid-friendly explanations, gentle techniques, and sedation options available, we make the process as smooth and stress-free as possible for both you and your child.

Why choose us for treatment?
Saves permanent teeth

Early treatment preserves your child’s natural tooth, helping maintain their bite, alignment, and function as they grow.

Less referrals, more continuity

Having an endodontist on our team means your child gets the expert care they need—without being sent to a separate office.

Comfortable and compassionate care

We use age-appropriate language, offer multiple sedation options, and create a stress-free environment to help kids feel calm and supported.

The nerve treatment process

Step

1

Exam and diagnosis

We’ll begin with a gentle exam and digital X-rays to assess the damage and confirm whether a nerve treatment or root canal is needed.

Step

2

Personalized treatment planning

If treatment is recommended, we’ll explain the process step-by-step and discuss sedation options that best support your child’s comfort and cooperation.

Step

3

Gentle procedure

For baby teeth, Dr. Amy will remove the infected tissue from the crown or root area. For permanent teeth, Dr. James will remove the infected tissue and thoroughly clean the inside of the tooth.

Step

4

Restoration and follow-up

For baby teeth, Dr. Amy will place a protective crown to maintain the tooth's function until it naturally falls out. For permanent teeth, Dr. James place a crown to protect the tooth and restore its full function for years to come. He'll also schedule follow-ups to ensure healing is on track.

FAQs

Yes—when performed by a trained specialist, both nerve treatments and root canals are safe and highly effective. Nerve treatments help preserve baby teeth until they naturally fall out, while root canals preserve permanent teeth and prevent the need for more invasive treatment later on. At Eastvale Kids Dental Studio, we take extra steps to ensure your child's experience is comfortable, using sedation and behavior management techniques that are tailored to each individual.

Our priority is to keep your child as comfortable as possible. We offer local anesthesia, nitrous oxide, and general anesthesia (as needed) to minimize discomfort during treatment. Most children feel significant relief after the root canal or nerve treatment, especially if they were previously experiencing pain from infection. Some mild tenderness may occur for a day or two, but it typically resolves quickly.

Signs your child may need root canal treatment include persistent pain, sensitivity to hot or cold, swelling, or discoloration of the tooth. However, some issues aren't visible without an exam. If you suspect something's wrong, schedule a visit—we'll perform an exam and take X-rays to determine if a nerve treatment (for baby teeth) or root canal treatment (for permanent teeth) is the right next step.
